As Gold Coast’s trusted glazier and glass repair specialists, we often have our ears to the ground. Our trade is influenced by uncontrollable factors, including the weather, and around Australia, tales of widespread damage – at the hands of cyclones or thunderstorms – tend to spread quickly.
Extreme weather occurs in Australia every year, but some years are noticeably worse than others. One of the toughest years for glass occurred in 2010. Two sets of summer storms, first in Melbourne in early March, and then in Perth weeks later, caused enough damage to keep glaziers busy for months at a time.
The Western Australia storms were especially severe – in fact, it is still the costliest natural disaster in the state’s history, with a damage total estimated at over a billion dollars. A serious of thunderstorms moved down the WA coast, from Geraldton onwards, bringing high winds, flash floods, damaging winds, and large hailstones, damaging property in a line almost four hundred kilometres in length.
The heavy precipitation was enough to cause some damage, but it was the large hailstones which were the most destructive. Measured at up to five centimetres in diameter, these fell on cars and homes across this region, and driven by winds of up 120 km/h, were able to access windows and glass panes that were typically protected by overhanging eaves. Along with falling trees and flying debris, it led to a huge number of insurance claims.
Even now, you can sometimes see cars driving around with hundreds of small dimples in their bodywork. Many are veterans of the Western Australia storms of 2010.
