How adding a cat flap to Crimsafe became the key to the perfect pool fence

The changes to pool legislation, caught many people off guard. In particular those with spas. They had to think about creating fencing to meet this new legislative compliance without detracting from the backyard. When we went to site to meet with this client, a typical pool fence was no in their mind – they had a vision of a Crimsafe pool fencing for the space.

What they ended up with added so much more value than a simple pool fence. Beauty, plus meeting all of the legislation requirements requirements for fencing – they get to enjoy it all year round now. So want something different than a typical pool fence or to enlarge your outdoor space, then get creative – we did!

Queensland law now requires spas to be fenced off the same as swimming pools. But Helen Koscica from the Gold Coast didn’t want her spa and beautiful deck spoiled by “a dicky little fence”.
She knew Crimsafe’s reputation for security and had seen Crimsafe screens used as pool fences. She came to us to ask if we could do that. We said yes, but we asked her if she’d be willing to think outside the box (or the little fence, in this case).
What if she put a Crimsafe screen around her glorious floor-to-ceiling living room windows instead? Not only would her spa be compliant, she’d be able to leave her windows open and let the breeze through without worrying about burglars or insects.
“It was Heather at Central Glass and Aluminium who came up with the idea,” says Helen. “I’m so glad we did what she suggested.”
Add two external pool gates at the perimeter of the property and the project was complete—one super-secure house and spa.
Except for just one snag. The regulations require the latch of the pool “fence” to be at least 1500mm off the ground. We couldn’t use a standard handle for the Crimsafe screen. But that was no problem for the inventive minds at Central Glass. If you look closely at the pictures, you’ll see Helen has a lockable cat flap set at the right height. She can reach through the flap from the outside to operate the latch.
“The certifier for the Gold Coast Council loved that,” says Helen. “He thought the whole thing was the best screening enclosure he’d ever seen. He said the only thing we were missing was a couple of ramps for Jasper, our cat, and we’d be all set.”
