When you sit astride a semi-tropical zone, you get the best of two worlds. Gold Coast features a climate that is amenable year-round and a warm ocean temperature, while lacking the heat and humidity of the tropics, or a season of excessive rain. It is close to perfect, but not quite. The weather here still has some tricks up its sleeve.
The east coast of Australia is prone to be swept by a number of tropical storms each year, with the occasional cyclone coming ashore to do considerable damage. The losses of property on the coast, in the form of lost roofs and houses, have been mirrored by some catastrophic losses off the coast – such as the disappearance of the SS Yongala, back in 1911, with her full complement of passengers and crew.
The ‘East Coast Low’ made another appearance only two weeks ago here, bringing with it heavy winds, even heavier rains, and an added nemesis: by pure coincidence, a king tide occurred on the same night as the storm. But the breeze, and the intense rain, is what impacted most residents, with hundreds of instances of glass and window repairs being required in subsequent days. These issues aren’t entirely avoidable, but a number of tips can make it less likely that your Gold Coast home will be in need of some glass repair on the day after.
Overhanging branches on your property can pose a considerable threat to your property, especially when burdened with high winds, heavy rains, and sodden soil. Any dead branches should be cleared prior to the stormy season. In cases of extreme weather, it can also pay to brace your windows with boards, attached to the frames. This keeps them safe from blowing debris. If this isn’t possible, use masking tape to make an ‘X’ on your windows: this prevents glass from blowing in to your home, potentially injuring someone, if the glass breaks.
At Central Glass, all of our windows’ resistance to wind and rain are tested independently prior to installation, ensuring that the seals and braces are able to withstand the combination of elements that often makes landfall in Gold Coast. If even these measures fail to save your window, we are here to sort out the aftermath. Contact us for all Gold Coast window and glass repair needs!
