I know what my answer would be – what is yours?
Blasting from my radio today as I travelled to work, was the message from the Gold Coast Police about the dramatic increase in break ins on the Gold Coast. As if getting broken in to isn’t scary enough, the statistic that is staggering is the increase in brazen home invasions – when people should feel safe in their own homes. This defies comprehensive. As if the sheer thought of someone breaking in to your home isn’t bad enough, we now have to fear home invasion – when we are home enjoying our own home. So how safe are you?
YOU can keep yourself a little safer by:-
STAYING VIGILANT
- Try to vary your routines
- Do not post your travel arrangements on Facebook, Twitter etc or other social media avenue – you do not know everyone in your circle
- Get to know your neighbours
- If you are going away – get one of your friends to call around and collect the mail – don’t stop there get them to go inside and check internally for you
PROTECTING PROPERTY
- Do not leave items out on display – don’t forget to think about this for your car
- Consider branding or engraving your items, or micro dotting them
- Take photos of your items and keep a catalogue or serial numbers – this will help Police investigations and your Insurance claims
SECURITY SCREENS AND DOORS
- Understand if you have security screens or barrier screens – know their strength and weakness – not all security screens are security screens. Test it yourself – GRAB the screen and give it a good tug. Make sure the fixings are solid – and that it doesn’t come out with just a little effort!
- Checking the fixings of your security screens, make sure they are solid and well maintained
- Make sure you lock your security doors, both when you are out but importantly when you are at home
