You have read the article about safety glass, and are not sure if you have it or not!
So, how do you know?!
If your windows and doors are older than 10 years, chances are you may not have safety glass in your windows and doors. So what can you do to improve the anti-risk measures in your home? By arming yourself with the right knowledge, you can have greater peace of mind for the safety of you and your family.
Of course you can always decide to remove your existing glass and replace it with conforming safety glass – but I warn you to do this throughout your house will be an expensive exercise. Whilst we would encourage you to consider replacing those panels in the doors that you use all of the time, this may not be an option for you.
So what choices do you have an alternative:-
Window film
Possible, not something that you may have considered – but there are a vast variety of safety window films in the marketplace. Safety films can be applied to ordinary annealed glass to bring it up to Grade A safety glass requirements. It works in a similar fashion to laminated glass by holding shattered glass pieces to the film if broken.
This image shows you the pitfalls of a broken panel of annealed glass – can you imagine if this was a door? Horrific, I am sure you would agree!
There are some restrictions as to where film can and cannot be used – however it does provide a cost effective alternative to give you peace of mind. A quality window tinting firm will be up to date with the current Code requirements and be able to advise you on the right film.
There are also some added benefits to film application, consider applying a film with a tint – not only will you get all the elements of safety film you will also get energy efficiencies.
